MEDIA IMPACT STUDY · SILK DEVELOPMENT CYCLE
Amazing Spider-Man (2014) #4
CGC 9.8 NM/M · Universal · Marvel Comics, 2014
Development news sent it higher.
Development alone could not hold it there.
A transaction-level study of Amazing Spider-Man #4 CGC 9.8 through six years of Silk screen-development news—from a reported Sony feature film to a live-action television announcement, a formal series launch, and cancellation.
01 / THE STUDY TIMELINE
The biggest repricing arrived early in the development cycle.
3,370 eligible recorded sales across the lifetime capture. Four dated screen-development milestones are plotted against monthly medians; no screen project reached release during the study period.
Dots retain recorded sale dates. Monthly medians sit at mid-month; connecting lines do not estimate daily prices. Lines connect observed medians across periods with no sales; no values are calculated for those empty periods. Bars show recorded transactions per period. 2026 is partial through the October 1 capture. Scroll horizontally on smaller screens.
Jan 1–Jun 21, 2018 pooled median70 sales
Full-year 2021 pooled median468 sales
Jun–Dec 2024 pooled median122 sales
Jul–Sep 2026 pooled median56 sales
WHAT THE SALES SHOW
The first two development reports line up with the strongest local moves.
Around the June 22, 2018 film-development report, the 30-day median rose from $70 across 17 sales to $170 across 86 sales, a +142.9% change. The broader 90-day comparison was also positive: $75 across 44 sales before versus $153 across 140 after, or +104.0%.
The September 3, 2020 live-action television report produced another positive local comparison: $231 across 23 sales before versus $305 across 51 after, or +32.0%. The 90-day comparison was +18.4% ($228 to $270).
By the formal November 17, 2022 Silk: Spider Society announcement, the market response was much smaller: $208 across 43 sales before and $225 across 49 after, or +8.2%. On a 90-day basis both sides had a $225 median.
02 / CATALYST BY CATALYST
What changed around each event?
Median prices and recorded volumes in the 30 calendar days before and after each date. Event-day sales are excluded. Overlapping windows are not independent effects.
| Milestone | Before median | After median | Price change | Volume change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
1 Sony developing a Silk feature film ↗2018-06-22 | $7017 sales | $17086 sales | +142.9% | +405.9% |
| $23123 sales | $30551 sales | +32.0% | +121.7% | |
3 | $20843 sales | $22549 sales | +8.2% | +14.0% |
4 | $16518 sales | $16418 sales | -0.6% | 0.0% |
Samples below five transactions are flagged. Percentage changes are descriptive and do not establish causation. Monthly medians retain timing detail across a high-volume category. Each of the four principal development milestones has at least 17 recorded sales on both sides of a 30-day window, so 30-day comparisons are retained consistently; 90-day sensitivity is reported for broader context. Five observations is an editorial warning threshold, not a significance test.
03 / THE LONG VIEW
The long view shows the boom—and the unwind.
GPA annual averages rose from $63 in 2017 to $121 in 2018, $205 in 2020 and $351 in 2021. They then declined to $294 in 2022, $200 in 2023, $159 in 2024, $120 in 2025 and $110 in partial 2026. The highest monthly median was $431 in May 2021 across 35 recorded sales.
Annual averages reproduce GPA’s rounded summaries and differ from the medians above. The capture year is partial.
Film, television, and rumor need different labels.
The plotted timeline uses dated industry reporting for projects that were actually described as being in development or formally announced. It does not convert fan casting, social speculation, or unsourced “rumor” posts into events. The 2018 feature-film report and 2020 television report were development-stage stories; the 2022 Spider Society announcement was more concrete, but the project still never reached release.
No separate animated Silk project was verified in the trade sources used for this study. Animated Spider-Verse activity may have contributed to broader Spider-character attention, but it is treated as market context rather than mislabeled as a confirmed Silk adaptation.
Cancellation was not a second crash trigger
By May 2024 the book had already fallen substantially from its 2021 highs. The 30-day cancellation comparison was −0.6%, and the 90-day comparison was −7.1%. That pattern suggests much of the development premium had already unwound before the negative headline arrived; it does not prove the cancellation had no effect.

Sales & coverage
Source: GPAnalysis ↗. The supplied Amazing Spider-Man (2014) #4 CGC 9.8 Universal capture contains 3,370 dated transactions from 2014 through October 1, 2026, and all 13 annual counts reconcile to the individual rows. No supplied row required exclusion. Repeated certificate numbers remain separate transactions because a copy can resell.
Calculations & limitations
Monthly medians use individual recorded nominal dollar prices. Event windows use days −30 through −1 and +1 through +30, excluding the event day because sale time is unavailable; 90-day sensitivity uses the same rule. The baseline pools January 1 through June 21, 2018, before the first plotted Silk film-development report. The latest window is July–September 2026, the latest complete quarter before the October 1 capture.
Annual curves reproduce GPA’s rounded annual averages. Transaction counts are GPA-covered transactions, not unique copies or total-market volume. Timing does not establish causation. No inflation adjustment, fees, broad-market control or statistical significance test is applied. Development reports, broader comic-market conditions and Spider-Man franchise attention overlap.
